A Chance Encounter and a Journey of Transformation in Costa Rica
In 2017, my husband and I embarked on a trip to Costa Rica that would change the course of our journey. Unlike our previous leisurely visits, this time we had a purpose—to scout out potential businesses. Little did I know that our adventure would lead us to the heart of authentic Costa Rican life and teach me invaluable lessons about self-discovery and human connection.
On the plane from Miami to San Jose, I had the unexpected pleasure of sitting next to Rebeka, a vibrant and outgoing woman traveling with her daughters. Our conversation began as a friendly exchange but soon evolved into something deeper. Despite my introverted nature, Rebeka's warmth and openness drew me out of my shell, and we found ourselves sharing stories of our love for Costa Rica and our shared mission for the trip.
As fate would have it, Rebeka lived in the same area where we were staying. It was a serendipitous connection that led to an invitation to dinner with her and her husband, Walter. Although my shy tendencies tugged at me to decline, I summoned the courage to say yes. The idea of socializing with strangers triggered a whirlwind of nerves, but I knew it was an opportunity for growth.
Our first dinner together was an experience that both terrified and transformed me. Rebeka and Walter's English was impressive, and my husband's Spanish bridged the communication gap. Amidst the laughter, Costa Rican music, and sips of Imperial beer, I felt a shift within me. Their genuine warmth melted my reservations, and for the first time in a long while, I found myself engaging in meaningful conversation.
A few nights later, we were invited to their home for dinner—an invitation that sent my anxiety spiraling. As we drove to their house, I battled my inner fears, trying to shake off thoughts of worst-case scenarios. Finding their home was an adventure in itself, as Costa Rica's unique address system had us circling their neighborhood multiple times. When we finally arrived, my unease melted away at the sight of their stunning home.
Walter's innovative door, a work of art in itself, welcomed us into a space that defied convention. Their home was a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor, with a garden nestled within the living space. As we dined on stuffed cabbage cooked in banana leaves, I found myself appreciating not just the delicious food, but the warmth of human connection.
The evening culminated with a view that took my breath away—a panoramic window framing the lights of Santa Ana and San Jose. It was a moment of tranquility, surrounded by stars in the sky and the man-made stars below. As we headed back to the hotel that night, I lay awake, reflecting on the day's revelations.
Costa Rica, a land of vibrant culture and genuine living, had taught me lessons that transcended geography. In the face of nature's beauty and the Ticos' simple joys, I recognized how much we often take for granted in our sheltered lives. Their appreciation for each other's company, their reverence for nature, and their deep respect for the land resonated deeply with me.
As I watched my husband sleep soundly, I pondered the impact of our travels. Costa Rica had unveiled a world where life wasn't something to be put on hold until retirement, but a gift to be embraced every day. From that moment on, my outlook shifted. I began to appreciate the present, seek connections, and value experiences over possessions.
My journey to Costa Rica was more than a physical voyage; it was a transformation of the soul. It was a reminder that the world beyond our comfort zones is brimming with opportunities to grow, connect, and learn. The lessons I carried home from this enchanting land continue to guide me, reminding me to savor life's moments, appreciate the beauty around me, and open my heart to the world.
